About Isa Koi Farm

What we believe and focus

Nishikigoi, which is a local product in Niigata Prefecture, is regarded as "Living Art Work" that changes its appearance over time. We are passionate about Nishikigoi and breed each one of them with our hearts and great effort. Nishikigoi is different from typical art works such as ceramics, paintings, and sculptures because it is an art form that changes and can be enjoyed over time. Nishikigoi owners often anticipate how their fish will mature, which is part of the beauty and attraction of owning this type of “living art”. Although breeding Nishikigoi is a challenge to any breeders, it appeals to our creative persistence. We focus on developing its shape, color pattern, size and specific character. Furthermore, Nishikigoi can grow large, so we aim to breed massive and impacted Nishikigoi to amaze people.

In 1970, after I quit my job at a local agricultural cooperative in Niigata, I became interested in Nishikigoi breeding and established Isa Koi Farm. Since I started my farm, I have sold Nishikigoi to hobbyists in Japan for 20 years. I never expected that Nishikigoi hobbyists would gradually increase in numbers around the world. I used to travel around Japan on business much of the time, but now I travel around the world instead.

Nishikigoi is admired as symbol of peace and happiness, and it is also considered as the national fish of Japan. The raising of Nishikigoi and the swimming motion can ease the stress in people. I enjoy watching the change of Nishikigoi over time and anticipate its potential to develop into a world-class fish. Sometimes they are successful in fulfilling one’s expectations, and at other times they fall short. In either case, I believe that it is just part of the "Quality of Life" as being a Nishikigoi lover.

Nishikigoi breeders in Niigata Prefecture including myself are diligent in our breeding method and are proud to be Nishikigoi breeders. We strive to create unique, interesting, and healthy Nishikigoi to appeal to each and every hobbyist.

After I graduated from a high school, I worked for 3 years in Tokyo. After that, I came back to Niigata to become a Nishikigoi breeder. My father was my mentor and taught me the process of breeding Nishikigoi, such as culling, spawning, and raising then to maturity.

Nishikigoi are capable of growing large so I aim to create powerful, massive, and beautiful Nishikigoi that amaze people. Fortunately, I have associates who also breed Nishikigoi in Niigata and we establish a network to of communication and cooperation to help developing our Nishikigoi to their fullest potential.

I often dropped by the Shinoda Koi Farm (Uchizo) to have a cup of coffee when I was a university student. My father is a breeder in Niigata, so I think of nothing but being a breeder. After I graduated from university, I started to work at Isa Koi Farm. Now I am in charge of managing a part of the farm. Meanwhile, I run my father's farm, Maruhide Koi Farm as well.

In addition, I like bull fighting, a local event, and I own 2 bulls. Bull fighting and Nishikigoi breeding are representative cultures of Niigata. If you have a chance to come to Niigata, I would like you to experience our culture.

I've started working as a new staff at Isa Koi Farm since April, 2010. I'm glad to have a chance to introduce myself. It is first time for me to participate in koi breeding work place. I'm beaten by bloody buffalo gnats flying around mud ponds but I do my best to learn how to breed Nishikigoi!
